Q. Why did you start Turkeys 4 America?
A. In 1996, I was nine years old and watching TV when I head on the news that the Greater Boston Food Bank was short 5,000 turkeys
with only one week left before Thanksgiving. I told my parents that I wanted t o help. My sister Betsy and I passed out flyers in the neighborhood asking for donations. We received 36 turkeys, which we delivered to the Greater Boston Food Bank. Last year, through the generous donations of many people, we provided over 1,000,000 servings.
Q. How do we get started?
A. Its easy. To officially register for the competition, your principal or group organizer should e-mail us at turkeys4america@aol.com with the following information:
- 1) Your school or organization name
- 2) Your school or organization address
- 3) Number of students or members
- 4) Contact person
- 5) Contact phone number
Q. After we register for the competition, what should we do next?
A. Have fun with it! Be creative and remember that regardless of how much you raise, your efforts will help many needy families.
Q. What ideas are other schools/organizations planning for this competition?
A. Great question! WeŽll give you the answers after the competition! Anything said before would be cheating! Each school/organization should use this as an opportunity to develop their own creative ideas to raise donations and awareness for fighting hunger. We started by distributing flyers in our neighborhood and then we came up with new ideas each year.
Q. How should we coordinate this effort in our school?
A. The principal or group organizer should designate several team leaders who will be in charge of overseeing the fundraiser.
Q. What is the role of the team leader?
A. The team leaders will be responsible for getting students excited about this event and in communicating with us about what you need from Turkeys 4 Americ (i.e., flyers, information on our program, etc.)
Q. What should we do with donations that are collected?
A. All checks should be made payable to Turkeys 4 America. Cash donations should be tallied and put into a money order made out to Turkeys 4 America. The envelope containing your checks should have the following: contact person's name and phone number, school or organization name, and town from which the checks are coming. The envelope should then be mailed to:
Turkeys 4 America
P.O. Box 904
Westwood, MA 02090
Q. What is the deadline for donations?
A. All donations should be received by Tuesday, November 23th.
Q. When will the winners be announced?
A. The top three schools will be notified the week of December 4th. Their names will be featured on our web site and mentioned in any media coverage. At that time, we will contact the team leaders to arrange a convenient date to present your school/organization with the Turkey Cup. |
